“Why Did BSF Allow Entry?” Mamata Banerjee Questions Centre Over Murshidabad Violence

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday alleged that the recent violence in Murshidabad was the result of “pre-planned communal riots” and questioned the role of the Border Security Force (BSF), claiming that individuals from across the border were allowed into the state to incite unrest.

Banerjee’s comments came in response to reports suggesting that an initial investigation into the violence pointed to the involvement of alleged Bangladeshi miscreants. Speaking at a gathering of Muslim clerics, she condemned the violence that recently claimed three lives in Murshidabad during protests against the Waqf Act. Several others were also injured in related incidents in South 24 Parganas.

Mamata Blames BJP, Defends State

The Chief Minister accused the opposition BJP of inciting people and attempting to tarnish Bengal’s image.

“Some are defying the Constitution. Ambedkar gave us this Constitution, not the BJP. What are they doing with it? They’re using it to incite people. Sections of the media are also complicit in spreading fake news to defame Bengal,” Banerjee said.

She urged the Muslim community to refrain from violence and respect law and order.

“We have deep respect for both Imams and Purohits. Don’t get provoked by the BJP’s words,” she advised.

Calls for Accountability and Action in Delhi

Banerjee challenged the Central government’s decision-making, especially regarding the recent amendments to the Waqf Act.

“Why the sudden rush to amend the Waqf Act? Didn’t you consider the implications, especially knowing the situation in Bangladesh? Bengal shares borders with Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. Hold discussions and sign agreements if needed. But instead, you’re creating unrest through certain agencies facilitating cross-border movement,” she alleged.

Referring to reports quoting Home Ministry sources about Bangladesh’s involvement, Banerjee said the responsibility lies squarely with the Centre.

“If Bangladeshis were involved, then it’s a failure of the Central government. The BSF guards the borders—not the state police. Why did they allow outsiders, including alleged BJP goons, to enter, create chaos, and flee?” she questioned.

Urges Peaceful Protest in National Capital

Calling for organized and peaceful demonstrations, Banerjee urged the Muslim community to take their concerns to Delhi.

“Go to Delhi and protest peacefully. Seek appointments with the President and Prime Minister. Conduct programmes and stay there if needed. TMC MPs will stand by you,” she assured.
