Rare Medical Wonder in Nagpur: 70-Year-Old Woman Found with Heart on the Right Side

Nagpur: In a case that has left the medical fraternity astonished, doctors in Nagpur have discovered a rare condition in a 70-year-old woman whose heart is located on the right side of her chest instead of the left.
The woman, a resident of Savner, was admitted to Lata Mangeshkar Hospital after she complained of chest pain and breathing difficulty. During routine ECG tests, doctors noticed something unusual about the position of her heart. To confirm their doubts, renowned cardiologist Dr. Hitendra Bhagwatkar conducted an echocardiography, which revealed that her heart was situated on the right side.
According to doctors, such a congenital condition being detected at the age of 70 is extremely rare. Globally, this may be only the third or fourth known case, and in India, it is possibly the only one of its kind.
The challenge did not end with diagnosis. Because the heart was positioned on the right, all the major blood vessels were also reversed, making treatment highly complex. Despite this, Dr. Bhagwatkar and his experienced team successfully performed angiography and found a 90 percent blockage in the main artery (LAD).
With extreme care and precision, the doctors carried out angioplasty and managed to save the woman’s life.
She is now in stable condition and has been discharged from the hospital. The hospital management, including Vice President and MLA Dr. Ashishrao Deshmukh and senior officials of the medical college, have praised the cardiology team for their exceptional work in this extraordinary case.
