Observes ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to Mark 50 Years Since Emergency;

In a solemn ceremony held today, the Chief Minister, along with other dignitaries, participated in the observance of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency in India.

The day serves as a poignant reminder of a period when constitutional rights were curtailed, and the foundations of India’s democracy were put to the test. The observance called upon citizens to reflect on the lessons of the past and to renew their commitment to the Constitution and its guiding principles.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of protecting democratic institutions and upholding the values enshrined in the Constitution — justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. “We must remain vigilant in preserving the spirit of our Republic,” he stated.

As part of the programme, a commemorative postal stamp honouring Captain Williamson A. Sangma — the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya and a pioneering leader of the North East — was officially released. The stamp was presented to his youngest daughter, Rebecca Momin, in a moment of pride and remembrance for the Sangma family.

The event concluded with renewed calls for constitutional awareness and civic responsibility, especially among the younger generation
