Meghalaya Government Rolling Out Phased CCTV Project After Consultations with Local Durbars: CM Conrad Sangma
The CCTV installation is part of a multi-phase security enhancement programme covering several localities

Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday informed media persons that the ongoing installation of CCTV cameras across Meghalaya is being carried out in close consultation with local Durbars and community authorities, particularly in Shillong and other key areas.
The Chief Minister said that the initiative follows extensive discussions with traditional institutions, adding that he recently held a major meeting in Mawro (Mauro), where CCTV cameras were formally inaugurated. Details of the project, he noted, were shared with local Durbars to ensure transparency and community involvement.
The CCTV installation is part of a multi-phase security enhancement programme covering several localities, including Mawro, Jowai, Thura and Shillong. At present, 227 CCTV cameras are being implemented under the first phase, with nearly 70–80 per cent of the work already completed.
Sangma stated that the first phase focused on strategically important locations, while a second phase will see the installation of an additional 200 to 300 cameras. The entire project is planned as a year-long, phased rollout, taking into account available financial resources, manpower and monitoring capacity.
Emphasising the importance of the initiative, the Chief Minister said CCTV surveillance is a necessary investment for enhancing public safety, strengthening security, and monitoring illegal activities including drug-related offences. While acknowledging the financial costs involved, he stressed that security and safety remain a top priority for the government.
The government, he added, is following all prescribed procedures for funding and implementation, with each locality typically requiring three to four cameras to ensure effective coverage. The project continues to progress steadily with active involvement of local communities and authorities.
