Meghalaya Government Relocates Street Vendors from Civil Hospital Junction to Improve Traffic and Safety

Shillong, January 23, 2026: The Urban Affairs Department, Government of Meghalaya, has successfully relocated 29 street vendors from the busy Civil Hospital junction in Shillong to a newly constructed vending zone at the Public Works Department (PWD) premises in Barik.

The move is aimed at easing congestion and improving pedestrian and vehicular movement in the area, particularly for emergency vehicles accessing the hospital. With the footpath now cleared, authorities report a significant improvement in traffic flow and public safety.

Vendors have welcomed the relocation, expressing satisfaction with the new site, which offers adequate space and protection from rain and wind. Citizens have also responded positively to the initiative, noting smoother movement and reduced crowding around the hospital entrance.

The relocation drive was carried out under the guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, who has emphasised dignity and livelihood security for street vendors. This marks the second successful relocation initiative by the Urban Affairs Department, following an earlier effort at Khyndailad.

Officials said such initiatives will continue across key urban areas of Shillong with the aim of enhancing mobility, ensuring pedestrian safety, and creating dignified and organised livelihood spaces for vendors across the city.
