Fourth Arrest in Activist Dilseng Sangma Murder Case in Meghalaya

Shillong, Jan 13 Meghalaya Police have arrested one more person in connection with the murder of activist Dilseng M. Sangma, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Dilseng Sangma, a prominent leader of a Garo organisation, was brutally assaulted on January 9 in the Rajabala area of West Garo Hills district. He had gone to the area along with fellow activists to inspect alleged illegal stone quarrying activities, police said.
The activist later succumbed to his injuries, while another person accompanying him sustained serious injuries in the attack.
Officials suspect that the assailants were goons backed by illegal stone quarry operators operating in the area.
Superintendent of Police A.T. Sangma said the latest arrest was made on Monday after sustained raids, adding that three accused had been arrested earlier. He stated that the investigation is progressing steadily and further arrests cannot be ruled out.
The murder had triggered tension in parts of West Garo Hills, prompting the deployment of additional security forces and the convening of peace committee meetings to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has strongly condemned the killing and assured that all those responsible will be brought to justice, while appealing to the public to maintain peace and harmony.
