Shillong, Aug 23 – The Centre of Medical and Sales Representatives’ Union (CRU), Shillong, on Friday organised a Convention on medical-related issues under the theme “Quality Medicine at Affordable Prices”. The programme, held at the R. B. Hindi Secondary School Auditorium, Keating Road, also marked the 9th death anniversary of Comrade D. P. Dubey.
The event brought together doctors, medical representatives, pharmacists, advocates, and stakeholders from the healthcare sector. Distinguished speakers included Dr. Adorable Kharbamon, a renowned Shillong-based doctor; Prof. Sujit Nandi Mazumder, retired professor and senior member of MJCTUA; Com. Edward Lynshing, General Secretary of MJCTUA; Barun Chakraborty, Secretary of Meghalaya Drugs Association; Steven Lyngdoh Mawphlang, proprietor of Jes Pharmaceuticals; and Advocate P.C. Neogi from Shillong Bar Association, among others.
The programme began with floral tributes to Com. D. P. Dubey, followed by the main convention on medical demands. Speaking on the occasion, Com. Tapash Das, District Secretary of CRU, highlighted the alarming rise in medicine prices across the country. He urged the government to bring medicines under stricter price control and demanded “zero percent GST on medicines and medical equipment so that the general public can access quality medicines at affordable rates.” He also stressed the need for stronger monitoring to prevent the entry of spurious medicines in the market.
Dr. Kharbamon, in her address, underlined the growing challenges faced by doctors due to rising costs of branded medicines, the misuse of generic alternatives, and the increasing trend of patients relying on online medicine purchases without proper consultation. She cautioned that such practices not only compromise treatment but also expose patients to the risks of spurious drugs. Emphasising the crucial role of medical representatives, she said, “They are the vital link between pharma companies and doctors, ensuring that quality and research-backed medicines reach patients.”
Other speakers, including CRU leaders and representatives from the medical fraternity, echoed the call for strict price regulations, revival of pharma PSUs, and safeguarding the healthcare system from counterfeit drugs.
