Congress Reacts Strongly to Ronnie V. Lyngdoh’s Exit; Alleges MLA Sold Loyalty for “Silver Coins

Shillong, July 30:The resignation of Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, the lone Congress MLA in the Meghalaya Assembly, has drawn a sharp response from the state Congress leadership, which has alleged that the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is using corrupt means to engineer defections.

In a strongly worded press statement, the Congress said that Lyngdoh’s resignation was “not a surprise”, though the party has not received any official communication from him yet. The party accused the NPP of being on a “shopping spree” using “money raised through corruption and looting of the people of Meghalaya.”

Drawing a biblical analogy, the statement compared the defecting MLAs to Judas, who betrayed his master for silver coins. “Same as with our 3+1 MLAs who committed their loyalty to win as MLAs with the hand symbol of the Congress party and then betrayed us for the silver coins offered to them,” the party said.

The Congress asserted that the party’s legacy was larger than any individual and that new leadership would emerge stronger in the days ahead. “Congress was there before these MLAs and we will be there, stronger, with new leaders inducted into the party,” it added.

The statement further questioned the growing affluence of ministers and MLAs aligned with the ruling party, urging the public to demand transparency. “When your Ministers and MLAs are buying new cars, houses and enjoying luxury travel, we ask the people of Meghalaya to question the source of their sudden income,” the party said, alleging misuse of public money to fund political horse-trading and personal luxuries.

The Congress also suggested that Lyngdoh’s resignation may have been influenced by his declining performance and the possibility of not receiving a ticket in the next assembly elections. “His poor individual performance and realisation that he may not win again could also be a key reason behind his exit,” the statement claimed.

Concluding the note, the party reaffirmed its commitment to continue the fight against what it described as a “corrupt and exploitative regime” and promised to stand with the people of Meghalaya in the struggle for accountability and good governance.
