BSF MEGHALAYA FOILS CATTLE SMUGGLING ATTEMPT IN JOINT OPERATION WITH MEGHALAYA POLICE; 76 CATTLE RESCUED

07 APPREHENDED, 05 VEHICLES & WIRELESS SETS SEIZED

Acting on a specific tip-off, vigilant troops of the 22nd Battalion BSF observed suspicious movement of vehicles during routine border patrolling. Responding swiftly, the BSF launched a joint operation with the local police, resulting in the interception of five pickup trucks. Upon inspection, the vehicles were found to be transporting a total of 76 cattle—43 alive and 33 dead—in extremely inhumane and unhygienic conditions. The operation also led to the apprehension of seven Indian nationals involved in the illegal act.One of the apprehended individuals fell down and sustained minor injuries due to fear at the time of apprehension. He was promptly evacuated and sent to the nearest hospital, accompanied by a BSF representative.

Notably, three walkie-talkie sets were recovered from the apprehended individuals, indicating their coordinated efforts and links with an organized smuggling network. It was observed that the accused were using these wireless devices to communicate and coordinate the movement of vehicles—a common tactic employed by cross-border smugglers. The vehicles arrived in phases—initially two, followed by others—highlighting a well-planned smuggling strategy.

During initial questioning, the apprehended individuals failed to produce any valid documents regarding the ownership or commercial transport of the cattle. Additionally, there was no presence of any recognized Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in the area.

All seized items and the individuals have been handed over to the concerned police authorities for further investigation and legal action.

This operation once again reaffirms BSF Meghalaya’s firm commitment to securing the nation’s borders and curbing all forms of trans-border crimes. The BSF remains ever-vigilant in its mission to protect the integrity and safety of the country.
