USTM Bags All Prizes in On-the-Spot Science Speech Competition at the Assam Sahitya Sabha (Ghy) Science Exhibition

The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya
(USTM) made a remarkable impact at the Science Exhibition held during the Panchratna Guwahati
দ্বি-বার্ষিক অধিবেশন (Biennial Session) of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, showcasing innovation,
interdisciplinary learning, and student-led research excellence. Around 120 students and 12 faculty
members from 17 departments represented USTM at the exhibition, presenting working models,
research-based projects, and functional prototypes that drew significant attention from visitors,
academicians, and representatives from scientific and defence communities.

A major highlight of the event was that USTM students won all the prizes in the On-the-Spot Science
Speech Competition, demonstrating exceptional scientific understanding, confidence, and
communication skills, while also securing first prize by Nangram Gomtey, who spoke on earthquake-
resistant building designs, second prize by Mussabir Islam, who gave an outstanding speech on
Artificial Intelligence, and third position by Nishat Tashim from the IA Ayurvedic Medical college who
spoke on the food habits adopted during different seasons along with the consolation prizes across
various exhibition categories. The departments that actively participated included Computer Science
and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer
Applications, Physics, Earth Science, Botany, Zoology, Applied Biology and Food Science, Chemistry,
Mathematics, Physiotherapy, IAMC, Robotics Club, Pharmacy, and the Management departments.
The Department of Physics attracted special attention with a live solar spot viewing demonstration,
while the Department of Mathematics presented the “Around the World Hamilton Model.”
Engineering departments showcased several practical and technology-driven models, including a
Solar Powered Grass Cutter, Smart Attendance System, Money Mitra financial assistance model,
Smart Hybrid Energy Management System, Smart Structures for Existing Conditions, and a
Sustainable Grey and Ground Water Management System. Drone applications, robotics-based
models, electronic speed controllers for drones was developed by the Robotics Club of USTM,
elephant-trained collision risk mitigation systems developed by the Zoology Department, and
intelligent monitoring mechanisms. Life science departments such as Botany, Zoology, Applied
Biology, Food Science, and Earth Science presented interdisciplinary models addressing
environmental sustainability, biological applications, and real-world scientific challenges.
Notable research presentations from the Department of Pharmacy included the project on
“Targeting ERBB2 in Breast Cancer using Cholest-22-ene-21-ol: An In-Silico Approach” and the work
by Mobina and Tasnem on “Harnessing Fatty Acids from Bedouin Sheep Tail Fat for Sciatica
Management.” The Management departments also actively participated in the exhibition, and space
remains to include further details of models presented by other departments.
Faculty coordinators guided and mentored the students throughout the exhibition to ensure
technical clarity, effective presentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The participation
significantly enhanced academic exposure and reaffirmed USTM’s commitment to innovation,
scientific outreach, and experiential learning.
The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya has expressed immense pride in its scientists'
and student researchers' achievements, reaffirming its commitment to fostering a robust research
culture that promotes innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and societal impact. These

accomplishments collectively reinforce USTM’s position as a leading institution contributing
meaningfully to India’s scientific progress and the global knowledge economy.
