54th Meghalaya Statehood Day Celebrated with Grandeur at Baghmara

Baghmara, January 21: The 54th anniversary of Meghalaya Statehood Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Baghmara today. On the occasion, rich tributes were paid to the founding father of the State, (Late) Captain Williamson A. Sangma. This was the first time that the official State-level Statehood Day समारोह was held at Baghmara.

The programme began with the soulful rendition of the State Anthem by the Khmih Choir, Shillong, followed by vibrant cultural performances by different tribes of Meghalaya, showcasing the State’s rich heritage.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that it was by divine blessing that the people of Meghalaya were granted their own land, their own State and their own identity.
“With confidence, determination and strong will, we will surely achieve the goals we have set for ourselves,” he said.

Paying tribute to the leaders who spearheaded the Statehood movement, the Chief Minister said that Meghalaya attained Statehood through a non-violent, persistent and unwavering struggle.

He expressed concern over the growing negativity and hatred among communities, especially on social media, and reminded people of the values and sacrifices of the elders and mothers whose prayers led to the creation of the State.

The Chief Minister informed that he had received a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveying warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Meghalaya on the occasion of Meghalaya Day. The Prime Minister also fondly recalled Late P.A. Sangma and acknowledged his immense contribution to Meghalaya and the nation.

Speaking on development, the Chief Minister said that Meghalaya has witnessed rapid progress in recent years, recording an average growth rate of around 10 per cent over the last three years. However, he подчеркित किया कि true development must be felt in the daily lives of the people.

He announced the sanction of the second phase of the Baghmara Water Supply Project at a cost of ₹140 crore and assured that issues related to road connectivity and the upgradation of the Baghmara Civil Hospital would be taken up on priority.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that this was perhaps the first time in his political career that such a major State-level celebration was being held at Baghmara. He added that the Government is committed to ensuring that development reaches even the most backward districts like South Garo Hills.

Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that Meghalaya Day is an important occasion to reflect on the State’s journey and to chart the way forward. He noted that people-centric governance under the MDA Governments has brought visible and positive change across the State.

Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, in his keynote address, stressed the need for balanced development, stating that progress would be meaningful only when it reaches all regions equally.

During the programme, the Meghalaya Day Awards and Governor’s Police Medals were announced in recognition of exemplary service and outstanding contributions. A video titled “Rise Meghalaya” highlighting the State’s development journey was also screened.

The programme concluded with the rendition of the National Anthem.
